HDFC Smart EMI is for people who already hold an HDFC Bank credit card and want to pay a large spend in instalments instead of all at once. You can convert billed or unbilled card transactions into EMIs, with interest starting from 0.99% a month and a tenure of 6 to 48 months. There are no documents and the whole thing happens online in a few minutes.

Smart EMI vs revolving your card bill
If you can’t pay your full card bill, the worst option is to pay the minimum due and carry the rest forward. Revolving credit on most cards attracts very high interest. Converting the big purchase into a fixed EMI gives you a predictable monthly payment, a clear end date and, in most cases, a lower cost than revolving the balance.
Keep in mind: the converted amount stays blocked on your credit limit and is released as you repay. Also check whether any processing fee or GST applies on the screen before you confirm.
What will the EMI be?
Here is an illustrative example assuming 0.99% a month (about 11.88% a year) on a reducing balance. Your actual rate and terms may differ.
| Loan amount | Tenure | Monthly EMI | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | 6 months | ₹8,624 | ₹1,747 |
| ₹50,000 | 12 months | ₹4,440 | ₹3,276 |
| ₹1,00,000 | 2 years | ₹4,702 | ₹12,842 |
| ₹2,00,000 | 4 years | ₹5,255 | ₹52,240 |
A shorter tenure means a higher EMI but much less total interest. Pick the shortest tenure you can comfortably afford.
Things to check before you convert
- The rate on your screen: 0.99% a month is the starting rate. Confirm the rate offered for your transaction.
- Total interest: multiply the EMI by the number of months and compare it with the original amount.
- Your credit limit: the converted amount stays blocked until repaid, so leave headroom for regular spends.
- Early closure: if you may pay off early, check the terms for pre-closing the EMI.
- Your bill date: converting before the due date avoids late fees and interest on that transaction.

Who it suits
A good fit for HDFC cardholders who made a big purchase, such as a phone, appliance or travel booking, and want to spread it out without applying for a separate loan. Look elsewhere if you don’t hold an HDFC credit card, or if you need cash in your bank account rather than an EMI on a card transaction. HDFC’s instant loan for cardholders covers that need.
